Does my period app sell my data? How to check in 5 minutes

Short answer: whether a cycle app shares or sells your data is not visible in the app itself. You see it in the privacy policy, in the list of companies the app works with, and in the trackers inside the app. Below are five checks you can do in five minutes, on any app. We do not name other apps here. Do the checks yourself, then you do not have to take anyone's word for it, ours included.

Why it matters

Cycle data is special category data: it says something about your health, your sex life and sometimes about a pregnancy. The Dutch data protection authority warned in 2026 that users of period apps often do not know what happens to that data. Rightly so.

Check 1: does the privacy policy say "partners" or "third parties"?

Open the privacy policy and search for "partner", "third parties" and "advertising". If it says data is shared with "partners for personalised advertising" or "analytical purposes", something leaves the building. At PERIOD. it says what does not happen: no ads, no sale, no sharing for marketing.

Check 2: is there a list of processors?

Every app that takes this seriously publishes which companies technically process the data: hosting, email delivery, payment handling. No list is a bad sign. A list with dozens of marketing companies is too. Our list is here, and it is short.

Check 3: where are the servers?

Inside the European Union the strictest rules for health data apply. If it says "United States" or says nothing, you know less than you think. PERIOD. runs on servers in the EU.

Check 4: which trackers are inside the app?

On iPhone, the App Store shows under "App Privacy" which data is collected and whether it is linked to you. On Android it is under "Data safety". If it says "Data used to track you", there is an advertising tracker inside. PERIOD. has no third party advertising or analytics tracker in the app.

Check 5: how does the app make money?

This is the big one. An app that is free and sells no subscription earns somewhere else. Usually ads, and ads work better with your data. An app with a clear subscription does not need that. We are open about it: the basics are free, plus pays for the servers.

What to do if it does not add up

In the EU you have the right to have your data deleted. Every app must make that possible. Here is how, step by step.
