Implantation bleeding or period? How to tell the difference

Implantation bleeding is light spotting that can occur when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. It happens in an estimated 15 to 25% of pregnancies, so far from everyone. Because it falls around your expected period, it's often mistaken for a light period.
The difference in one table
| Implantation bleeding | Period | |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | 6–12 days after ovulation (often slightly before the expected period) | On or around the expected date |
| Color | Light pink to light brown | Often starts light, turns bright red and heavier |
| Volume | Spotting, a few drops, no pad or tampon needed | Enough to need a product |
| Duration | A few hours to 1–3 days | 3–7 days |
| Clots | None | Sometimes small clots |
| Pain | None to very light tugging | Often cramps, sometimes intense |
Other causes of spotting
Not every unexpected bleed is a pregnancy sign. Common explanations:
- Ovulation spotting (around day 12–16).
- Spotting when starting or stopping contraception.
- Stress, illness or significant weight change.
- IUD (especially the first few months).
- Sex or a gynecological exam (cervix slightly irritated).
- Polyps or fibroids.

When a pregnancy test makes sense
A modern urine test is usually reliable from the day your period is expected, with some "early" tests usable 4–5 days before. Testing too early can give a false negative.
- Spotting + expected period doesn't arrive within a few days → take a test.
- Negative but period still missing → repeat after a week.
- Severe one-sided pelvic pain with spotting (especially if pregnancy is possible) → contact a doctor immediately to rule out ectopic pregnancy.
This isn't medical advice. In doubt, with heavy or prolonged bleeding, or persistent pain? Contact your doctor.
Why tracking helps
If you log your periods and ovulation (or suspected ovulation), you'll spot a "too early" bleed faster, typical for implantation, versus a normal period on schedule. Read: calculating ovulation and recognizing ovulation symptoms.
Private stays private
Bleeding patterns, possible pregnancies and suspicions don't belong with ad networks. PERIOD. stores it encrypted on EU servers, with no trackers. Read: a cycle app that doesn't sell data.
