# Your cycle has four phases, here's what each one actually does to you

Most of us were taught one thing about our cycle: it comes, it goes, it comes back. That is it. No one explained what is actually happening the other 25 days of the month, or why some weeks you feel unstoppable and others you can barely get off the couch.

Here is what is really going on. And once you understand this, it changes how you see yourself.

## Phase 1, Menstrual (days 1-5)

This is when your period arrives. Oestrogen and progesterone are at their lowest. Energy is lower, and your body is doing real work, the uterine lining is being broken down and shed. This is not the time to push through. It is the time to rest without guilt.

Gentle movement, warmth, and sleep are your best tools here. Many women notice they are more introverted during this phase and need more alone time. That is not weakness, it is your body communicating what it needs. Listen to it.

Practical tips: avoid scheduling important meetings if you can. Choose comfort food that is also nutritious, think iron-rich meals, warm soups, and dark chocolate (yes, really). Avoid caffeine overload, as it can make cramps worse.

## Phase 2, Follicular (days 6-13)

After your period ends, oestrogen starts rising. This is your rising phase, energy increases, focus sharpens, and you are more likely to feel optimistic and social. Your skin starts glowing thanks to rising oestrogen, and your cognitive performance is at its best.

This is one of the best times to start new projects, have difficult conversations, or tackle things you have been putting off. Your learning capacity is also at its strongest, so if you want to learn something new, this is the time.

On the fitness side, you can train harder now. Your muscles recover faster, your pain tolerance is higher, and you have more endurance. This is the ideal week for strength training, HIIT, or that new fitness class you have been wanting to try for months.

## Phase 3, Ovulation (around day 14)

Oestrogen peaks and a surge of LH (luteinising hormone) triggers the release of an egg. This is typically when you feel most energetic, confident, and communicative. Your voice is even slightly higher, and research shows your face appears subtly more symmetrical.

You are at peak output, use it. This is the time for presentations, job interviews, first dates, or that difficult conversation you have been putting off for weeks. You are at your most persuasive and charismatic right now.

But watch out: oestrogen also loosens your ligaments, which slightly increases injury risk. If you exercise, be extra careful with your knees and ankles, especially during twisting and jumping movements.

## Phase 4, Luteal (days 15-28)

Progesterone rises after ovulation. In the first half of this phase you may feel calm and productive, progesterone has a mildly calming effect. This is a good period for admin tasks, tidying up, and tasks that require concentration but not necessarily creativity.

In the second half, especially days 24-28, PMS symptoms can appear: bloating, irritability, fatigue, cravings, tender breasts, and mood swings. This is not you being "difficult." It is a hormonal shift that is completely normal.

Your body is preparing for your period. Give it what it needs: more sleep, nutritious food, fewer social obligations if possible. Magnesium can help with cramps and sleep issues. Movement is still good, but choose gentler forms like yoga, walking, or swimming.

## Why this matters

Understanding these phases does not just make you feel less crazy. It helps you plan your life around your body instead of constantly fighting it. Schedule your hard workouts in the follicular phase. Give yourself permission to rest during menstruation. Stop being surprised by how you feel on day 26.

You are not the same person every day of the month, and that is not a weakness. It is biology. And the better you understand that biology, the better you can take care of yourself.
