# Seed cycling: does it actually work, or is it a TikTok trend?

PERIOD. team · July 11, 2026

Seed cycling is one of the biggest "hormone balancing" trends of the last few years. The idea: eat daily **flax and pumpkin seeds** during the follicular phase (day 1 to ovulation), and **sesame and sunflower seeds** in the luteal phase (ovulation to period). Supposedly to support estrogen and progesterone.

## What the theory says

- **Flax** contains lignans, which have weak estrogen-like activity.

- **Pumpkin seeds** contain zinc, involved in progesterone production.

- **Sesame seeds** contain lignans and zinc.

- **Sunflower seeds** are rich in vitamin E and selenium.

Logical on paper. In practice: there is **almost no direct research** on seed cycling as a cycle-regulation method.

## What the evidence says (and doesn't)

- Studies on *flax* show modest effects on cycle length and estrogen metabolism, but usually with much larger amounts than seed cycling's "spoonful per day".

- There is **no well-designed clinical trial** demonstrating the specific two-phase protocol.

- Most "results" are anecdotal (TikTok videos, blogs). What people experience could be: more attention to food, extra fibre, more omega-3, or just the placebo of "doing something for yourself".

> This isn't medical advice. For severe PMS, PCOS, endometriosis or amenorrhea: talk to a doctor. Seed cycling doesn't replace medical treatment.

## Is there anything against it?

No, unless you have a nut/seed allergy, or you're on blood thinners (flax can interact; check with your doctor). For most people a spoonful of ground flax or pumpkin seeds is just *healthy extra nutrition*: fibre, magnesium, healthy fats. Nothing wrong with that.

## What's actually well-supported for PMS and cycle symptoms

- **Magnesium (glycinate or citrate)**: some evidence for reducing PMS and period pain.

- **Omega-3**: evidence for period pain.

- **Vitamin B6**: some evidence for PMS mood symptoms.

- **Strength training**: good for insulin sensitivity and cycle, especially in PCOS.

- **Enough protein and fibre**: steadier blood sugar, fewer luteal-phase cravings.

## How to test if something works for you

If you want to try seed cycling, give it at least **3 cycles** and log symptoms, energy, mood and flow in your cycle app. Then PERIOD.'s patterns will show whether something actually shifted, or you just paid more attention.

## Why "wellness" trends have a privacy angle

Trends like seed cycling ride on the advertising economy: symptom logs from commercial apps trigger supplement ads. PERIOD. sells no data, uses no ad trackers, and doesn't push a "miracle product".
