# Samsung Health vs PERIOD.: cycle tracking on Android compared

***A note up front:** this article compares publicly available information at the time of writing. We are the makers of PERIOD. All claims about Samsung are based on Samsung's own documentation and announcements. Features can change; check the current state with Samsung. Spotted a factual error? Email [hi@myperiod.app](mailto:hi@myperiod.app) and we will correct it.*

**Short answer:** Samsung Health is enough if you wear a Galaxy Watch and mainly want to know when your next period is due. If you want an explanation per phase, to ask questions, and an app that comes with you if you ever switch phone brands, a separate app such as PERIOD. fits better. Neither is contraception.

For Android users with a Samsung phone the question is fair: why a separate cycle app when Samsung Health already includes cycle tracking? As with [Apple's built-in tracker](https://myperiod.app/blog/apple-cyclusoverzicht-vs-period), the answer depends on what you are looking for.

## What Samsung does well

**Free and built in.** Cycle tracking ships with Samsung Health: logging periods, tracking symptoms and predictions for your next period and fertile window.

**Temperature-based predictions via the Galaxy Watch.** With a Galaxy Watch5 or newer, Samsung Health can measure your skin temperature during sleep and refine its predictions with it. The algorithm behind it comes from Natural Cycles and the feature is available in the Netherlands. Technically impressive, and a nice extra if you already wear one.

## The caveats

- **It works best inside the Samsung ecosystem.** The temperature feature needs a recent Galaxy Watch worn at least four hours per night. Without a Watch you are left with a calendar-based tracker.

- **Not contraception.** Worth stating clearly: even though the algorithm comes from Natural Cycles, cycle tracking in Samsung Health is not an approved contraceptive. Neither is PERIOD. for that matter.

- **Predicting, not explaining.** Here too: you see when, not why. No explanation per phase, no daily context, no assistant to ask questions.

- **Your data with a global tech conglomerate.** Samsung is a huge company with an extensive privacy policy that varies by region and service. We will not claim anything here we cannot back up: read their policy and judge for yourself. Our setup is simpler to verify: cycle data on EU servers in Frankfurt, a public [sub-processor list](https://myperiod.app/sub-processors), and no data trade.

## When is Samsung Health enough?

If you already wear a Galaxy Watch, mainly want to know when your next period is due, and have no need for explanations or questions: Samsung Health will serve you fine.

If you want to understand what happens in each phase of your cycle, ask an AI assistant your questions, learn to read your symptoms in plain language, and use an app that moves with you if you ever buy a different brand of phone: a specialised app is the more logical choice.
