# Ozempic, Wegovy and your cycle: what GLP-1 drugs do to your hormones

PERIOD. team · July 5, 2026

GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) are among the most-discussed medical developments of 2024-2026. Beyond weight loss, users increasingly report *cycle changes*, sometimes welcome, sometimes surprising.

## What happens in the body

GLP-1s change how your body regulates glucose, insulin and satiety. In women with **insulin resistance or PCOS**, those changes can indirectly affect the cycle: less insulin resistance → lower androgens → sometimes ovulation returns after years of absence. In others, rapid weight loss itself temporarily disrupts things.

## Most commonly reported cycle effects

- **More regular cycles** in PCOS, sometimes within a few months.

- **Return of ovulation**, hence the "Ozempic babies" term: unexpected pregnancies in people who thought they weren't fertile.

- **Shorter or irregular cycles** during rapid weight loss.

- **Temporary loss of periods** in large calorie deficits or undernutrition (hypothalamic amenorrhea).

- **Heavier or lighter flow** in the first months.

## Ozempic babies: not a myth

The term "Ozempic babies" went viral in 2024. What's actually going on:

- **PCOS + weight loss** can restore ovulation, long known, regardless of the drug.

- GLP-1s can affect absorption of **oral contraceptives** via slowed gastric emptying and (at higher doses) nausea/vomiting. For tirzepatide (Mounjaro) the manufacturer specifically advises a non-hormonal or additional method for 4 weeks after starting and after any dose increase.

- Unexpected fertility = a risk if you don't want to get pregnant.

> This isn't medical advice. Always discuss contraception and cycle changes with the doctor prescribing your GLP-1, and with your GP or gynecologist.

## Planning pregnancy while on GLP-1s

The official guidance is: **stop semaglutide 2 months before a planned pregnancy**, and tirzepatide 1 month before. There is not yet enough data on safety during pregnancy. If you become pregnant unexpectedly: contact your doctor right away.

## What your cycle app can do here

If you start (or stop) GLP-1s, it helps to log the first 3-6 months carefully: cycle length, flow, symptoms like nausea, energy and mood. If your doctor wants to adjust something, you'll have concrete data. PERIOD. predicts from *your* pattern and adapts, instead of clinging to a generic 28-day assumption.

## When to reach out

- 3+ months with no period for no clear reason.

- Very heavy bleeding.

- Suspected pregnancy.

- Cycle change + dizziness, extreme fatigue or hair loss (possible signs of losing weight too fast).

## Why this data is especially sensitive

The combination of GLP-1 use, weight and cycle data is *extremely* valuable to insurers, advertisers and data brokers. At PERIOD. it stays encrypted on EU servers, with no ad trackers, and we don't sell it to anyone.
