# Brown discharge: when it's normal and when to see a doctor

Brown discharge is usually just old blood. Fresh blood is bright red; once blood spends more time inside the body it oxidizes and turns brown or dark brown. On its own that's not a red flag, but context (when, how much, how long, with what other symptoms) determines whether it's normal or worth a chat with your doctor.

## When brown discharge is usually harmless

### At the start or end of your period

The first or last day(s) of a period are often lighter and browner. Flow is slower, blood lingers in the uterus or vagina, and it's already oxidized by the time it leaves.

### Spotting around ovulation

Some people see a few drops of light pink or light brown spotting around ovulation. It's linked to the brief estrogen dip at the time of the egg's release and usually happens once per cycle.

### The first months on a new contraceptive

With the pill, hormonal IUD, implant or shot, breakthrough bleeding or brown discharge in the first three to six months is common. The body is adjusting. If it persists or worsens, talk to your doctor.

### After sex

Light brown discharge after sex can come from small, surface-level irritation of the cervix. One-off and mild: usually fine. Recurring: get it checked.

### Implantation (possibly)

In some pregnancies, a short and very light bleed appears around six to twelve days after ovulation due to embryo implantation. Not everyone has this and it's often mistaken for an early period.

## When to contact a doctor

- Brown discharge with an unpleasant, fishy or strongly unusual smell.

- Brown discharge plus itching, burning, or pain when peeing or having sex.

- Brown discharge lasting **more than a few days** with no clear reason.

- Recurrent breakthrough bleeding outside your period or outside the adjustment phase of a new contraceptive.

- Brown discharge after menopause (a year without periods), always have it assessed.

- Brown discharge in a known pregnancy, especially with pain or if it's getting worse. Always call your midwife or doctor.

- Brown discharge after unprotected sex or with increased STI risk.

> This isn't medical advice. When in doubt, call your doctor or midwife, that's what they're there for.

## What might a doctor do?

Depending on your story, a GP may opt for a pelvic exam, smear test, STI test or ultrasound. Not to scare you, most causes are explainable and treatable.

## Why tracking a pattern matters

A one-off episode is almost never alarming. Recurring brown discharge at specific points in your cycle says a lot more. Logging date, amount and accompanying symptoms gives a doctor a clear picture in five minutes that you built up over a few months. That's exactly what a cycle app is for.

## Do it privately

What happens with your vagina shouldn't end up at Meta or Google. PERIOD. logs these symptoms encrypted on EU servers, with no ad trackers. More: [our privacy policy](https://myperiod.app/privacy).
