# Apple Cycle Tracking vs PERIOD.: what the built-in tracker can and cannot do

***A note up front:** this article compares publicly available information at the time of writing. We are the makers of PERIOD. All claims about Apple are based on Apple's own documentation. Features can change; check the current state with Apple. Spotted a factual error? Email [hi@myperiod.app](mailto:hi@myperiod.app) and we will correct it.*

**Short answer:** Apple's built-in Cycle Tracking is enough if you only want to know when your period is coming and you will stay on iPhone. If you want to understand what happens in each phase, ask questions and learn to read your symptoms, or might ever move to Android, a specialised app such as PERIOD. makes more sense.

Every iPhone ships with cycle tracking: the Cycle Tracking section in the Health app. Free, built in, from a company that takes privacy seriously. So why install a separate cycle app at all? Honest answer: for some women you should not. For others you should. Here is the difference.

## What Apple does well

**The encryption is stronger than ours.** Let us just start there. If you use iCloud with two-factor authentication and a passcode, your health data syncs end-to-end encrypted. Apple itself cannot read it. PERIOD. works differently: we process your data on EU servers in Frankfurt to make features like the AI assistant and sync possible. Encrypted in transit and at rest, with strict access controls, but not end-to-end. If maximum encryption is your single requirement and you need nothing else, Apple serves you well.

**The basics are solid.** Logging periods, tracking symptoms, predictions for your next period and fertile window, and notifications for cycle deviations. With an Apple Watch Series 8 or newer you also get a retrospective ovulation estimate based on overnight wrist temperature.

## Where the built-in tracker stops

- **iPhone only.** If you have an Android phone, or ever switch, that is the end of it. PERIOD. runs on iOS and Android and takes your data with you.

- **Predicting without explaining.** Apple shows you when, but not why. No explanation per phase, no context for why your energy dips on day 24. Explaining is exactly what PERIOD. was built for.

- **No assistant.** You cannot ask questions about your cycle. PERIOD. has an AI assistant that answers your questions with your own cycle as context (3 a day for free, up to 100 with plus), after your explicit consent.

- **No report for your doctor.** PERIOD. plus generates a clean PDF of your cycle history for appointments with your GP or gynaecologist.

- **Ovulation estimate needs a Watch.** The temperature-based estimate only works with an Apple Watch Series 8 or newer, and looks backward rather than forward.

## When is Apple enough?

If you only track to know when your period is coming, do not want to learn or ask anything, and will stay on iPhone: the built-in Cycle Tracking is a fine choice, and we say that without hedging.

If you want to understand what happens in each phase, ask questions, learn to read your symptoms, in your own language (PERIOD. speaks 19), with the option to ever move to Android: a specialised app makes more sense. That is how it works: a built-in feature does the minimum well, a specialised product does more.
